Our own stash of granite
So, we’ve been trawling around the country lanes of Cornwall spying out old barns and farmhouses to determine what granite might best suit ‘Delamere’. The typical granite around West Penwith (Sennen area) tends to be grey/silvery in colour; the granite ‘up country’ nearer to where we are staying is more brown with coppery tones. I must admit we have a preference for this but what will be the diplomatic fallout should we opt for something that is clearly a N Cornwall import? (Still, at least it’s not from Devon!
Enter one friendly, local farmer who farms the field in front of the site. He’s already been engaged on discussions re de-watering the site onto his field, should we need to. Turns out he regularly churns up huge chunks of granite on his land and has access to “all sorts” so we’ll see what treasures may be found. But our conversation is cut short by a “shout” from the Coastguard. As a volunteer for the coastguard, he is off to help rescue a tourist who has slipped off the coastal path near Porthcurno. All in a day’s work for a busy farmer down here!

Neatly dug hedging
Granite wall on a Cove cottage
Back on-site, Ian is well underway with his digger and suddenly the plot we bought just 4 months ago looks like a building site! The transplanted hedges are in and an opening for the driveway has been cut. And, guess what …..? In the process we’ve uncovered our own stash of granite under the boundary hedge and below the once pristine lawn. Who knows what other treasures await!?!
