Tackling the jungle

By way of distraction from the build itself, Clive has started to focus in on the garden and has been spending time down on site, cutting the hedges. For anyone who has seen him over the years in Tarvin, cutting our front hedge, you’ll know this is his favourite way to meet the neighbours and catch up on local chat. And so it proved here too! Within a few minutes of taking the front hedge to task, he was chatting with a number of locals, all of whom were keen to know what are our plans for ‘Delamere’! It’s true what they say about gardening being a stress-debuster then!

Best quote we’ve had so far: “Just treat anything that actually grows here as a bonus!”

We’ve still got agapanthus, pampas grass, hydrangea bushes – and bamboo. Enough bamboo, in fact, to set up a panda reserve!! I’m now learning that what I thought would make a gorgeous “screen”, rustling gently in the wind, is actually a rampant weed, choking everything around it! There may not be many trees round here but the locals do have gardens – we’ve even spotted a fruit tree or two. Seems like wind is actually going to be our biggest challenge. Being at the top of a hill, anything over 5 feet (ca 1.5m) is probably going to struggle. I best stay indoors then……

On a recent trip up to Angelsey (thanks Debs!), I managed to get some great inspiration from gardens in similarly exposed locations so surely plants WILL grow in West Penwith too? The garden allows us to feel some sense of control where the house definitely doesn’t. As with everything to do with ‘Delamere’, it seems we just need to find some creativity and innovative thinking. And looks like there won’t be any shortage of people around to share advice and words of wisdom!
