Well, a lot has happened since the last post – not least a second house move and a good dose of COVID19!
We took the decision in November to move out of St Ervan and find a Winter-let down nearer Sennen. Not only did this take the pressure off (we had planned to move out of St Ervan in February but it’s clear Delamere won’t be ready by then and finding temporary accommodation for just 2 months is likely to be nigh on impossible.) But it’ll also allow us to start settling down in West Cornwall and getting our lives back onto whatever track it is we naively thought we we were following!
Enter Sue and Alec at Merthyr Farm Cottages and their generations-old granite cottage, Trebeigh, with few mod cons but all the Winter cosiness needed with its solid walls, log fire, comfy beds! And a lovely neighbour, James, who helps us break back in when we inadvertently lock ourselves out!

They have really made us feel welcome in their tiny hamlet of Morvah and it’s hard not feel both calm and inspired by the surrounding landscape, which is full of ancient stones, historical mining sites and the ever-present Atlantic Ocean. We are here till the end of March – fingers crossed and a fair wind (and there has been plenty of that, for sure!!)
As we’re just 10 miles from “Delamere”, we can now make the Thursday night pub quiz in Sennen Cove. We’ve also joined the gym at the local secondary school, ParkRun at Lands End, badminton (Clive) and the local Rock Choir (Karyn). Apparently we’re singing at the Boardmasters festival at Newquay in August – ColdPlay, eat your heart out!
To say I feel instantly more settled and “at home” here is no exaggeration. My daily walks with Reggie – even in the bleakest of sea frets (the thick mist that comes in off the Atlantic – and doesn’t move, sometimes for days) – are really uplifting. There really is something spiritual about this part of Cornwall. “Pretty” it may not be, but the view changes constantly and it doesn’t take long to seep into your psyche.
At times of stress, I’ve walked along the coastal path by the farm and felt a real sense of peace. Which, for those who know me well, is not how you’d usually describe me! Hopefully I’m starting to calm down in my old age!
