Well, it’s been quite a day in W Cornwall!
Storm Eunice arrived this morning and took out the power and communications to our little hamlet of Morvah – not to mention the roof of the lifeboat station at Sennen Cove!!

Our solid granite cottage may have history on her side but the wind whistling through those age-old sash windows makes me yearn for our new double-glazed ones over in Sennen! Clive is away for the weekend and the noise of the wind is really unsettling for Reggie so I decided to head for my new favourite cafe, The Dog & Rabbit in St Just, with my laptop and a tonne of emails to get through. Sat by the log fire, with coffee and cake on tap, I thank my lucky stars that Eunice landed during opening hours and not at night!
Over in the Cove, It was quite sad to see the RNLI station roof strewn across the road and onto the rocks below. I remember when it was installed in 2001 to house a new, bigger lifeboat. Our youngest was a real fan of the RNLI boats but we would all get excited on Lifeboat Day or when there was a “shout” and that big navy and orange ‘hero’ would shoot down the slipway and off with a splash.
With the wind at our back, and a real sense of trepidation, Reggie and I climbed back up the hill towards “Delamere”. Would our roof have survived? What about the summerhouse? Not to mention the risk to our windows of flying timbers, loose rubble or even the odd ladder!! But all was well and the house seems to have withstood the storm (so far!!). It may have taken ages to finish but the roof has held up well! Looks like they have now started the outside drainage work so we should soon be connected into the main sewerage system – a relief indeed!!

Back in Morvah, the power is still out ☹️ That’s no heat or light, not to mention WiFi 😱. So, with the light fading, I’ve packed a bag, taken Reggie and a bottle of wine and checked myself in to the Lands End hostel. It’s just been taken over by the lovely Niko and Jason who are now (nearly) our neighbours! Turns out, Jason works in the same tech sector as me, so surely – on a per capita basis – that makes Sennen the capital of the UK’s identity management industry??!
See you on the other side!
