By the end of September, much of the project has ground to a halt as we wait for the arrival of the steels. The blockwork has come up as high as it can and we now needed the steels to set out the apertures for the sliding doors downstairs. These days, often find myself thinkingContinue reading “Positively positive”

Seasons in the sun
The summer has come and gone and, with it, the 4x4s, crowded lanes, supermarket delivery vans and restaurants with waiting lists. At a blink, we head into the second half of our first year in Cornwall and I must admit to no small sense of trepidation. The next 6 months will see Delamere really takeContinue reading “Seasons in the sun”
Into the second trimester
The last few weeks have been bonkers busy with the Bright B&B fully operational. Friends and family have been staying on an almost continuous basis and it’s been fantastic to explore N Cornwall with them all. Top recommendations so far: Fish & chips at the Golden Lion in Port Isaac (brother-in-law could be included!) ThursdayContinue reading “Into the second trimester”
Foundations – part 2
Excavation is really underway now. The trenches need to be shuttered to ensure the builders can get the concrete in without the sides collapsing. And the rain doesn’t help. I feel like I’m back on the beach with the kids building sandcastles in the face of the incoming tide. But it has been exciting toContinue reading “Foundations – part 2”
Foundations – part 1
Sorry for the radio silence. The past weeks have been a combination of inactivity on-site – and then technical issues with the website (aka I forgot the password!!) So …. where were we? The last blog reported that excavations had uncovered a large amount of contaminated waste which had to go off to be testedContinue reading “Foundations – part 1”
Be careful what you wish for ….
So …. my last blog ended with ” Who knows what other treasures await?” Hah! On Monday the guys got digging in earnest. On Tuesday, they hit oil! Sadly, not the type likely to change our fortunes but an oily sludge most likely resulting from an old container or engine having been buried in theContinue reading “Be careful what you wish for ….”
Granite-a-plenty
So, we’ve been trawling around the country lanes of Cornwall spying out old barns and farmhouses to determine what granite might best suit ‘Delamere’. The typical granite around West Penwith (Sennen area) tends to be grey/silvery in colour; the granite ‘up country’ nearer to where we are staying is more brown with coppery tones. IContinue reading “Granite-a-plenty”
Facilities now available on-site
As I left our temporary home near Padstow at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the wind turbines at the top of the hill looked like elegant dancers, waving their arms in the early morning breeze. Everything in this county just seems more lovely – or maybe I’ve just got more time to notice it all. OurContinue reading “Facilities now available on-site”
Building the Cornish Way
Today I am heading back from N Ireland to my new home in Cornwall. I feel my feet are spread across multiple camps. As I boarded my plane to Exeter, Samson & Goliath, the huge cranes of Belfast’s historic shipyard, dominated the skyline, as I boarded my plane to Exeter, I can’t help wondering howContinue reading “Building the Cornish Way”
